The compassionate face of Islam

MUSLIMS should welcome the announcement by Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of religious affairs, that it will be the government’s policy to promote compassionate Islam. Actually, I believe there is only an “Islam” whose teachings are primarily compassionate, a blessing and merciful. Anyone who reads the Quran will know that it describes itself as a “healing and a mercy to those who believe” (Al Isra (17) verse 82). In fact, the Holy Prophet Muhammad himself is described in the Quran as rahmatan lil Alamiin for the whole world and the creations (Al Anbiya (21): verse 107). Essentially, rahmah means love or affection and is often understoo

A formidable, but doable, challenge

THERE was the Islam of PAS that wanted to create an Islamic state with the Quran and the Hadith as the Constitution of the country. There was the Islamisation of Dr Mahathir Mohamed to introduce universal Islamic values of honesty and hard work as the basis of governance. Only for the policy to be hijacked by conservative ideologues into a massive expansion of the Islamic bureaucracy and Syariah jurisdiction. Then there was the Islam Hadhari of Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, a civilisational approach to Islam to promote good governance, democratic practices, and equitable sharing of wealth. There was a moment of openness when Abdullah was able to assert his belief in the need for ijtihad (reint

Parliamentary oversight of Government appointments

It is reported that the Prime Minister in his monthly address to the staff of the Prime Minister’s Department, mentioned that "Parliament would screen the candidates for judges and for other posts before submitting them to the Yang di Pertuan Agung ". G25 welcomes the role that parliament will be playing in screening appointments to key posts in public institutions but this process should not apply to judges as it will lead to political interference in the independence of the judiciary. The process of appointing judges should be left to the Judicial Appointments Commission to select them before proposing their names to the Agung, with no influence from any side because judges are expected to

Lim Teong Kim driven by passion for country and football

OCTOBER 11 — I feel compelled to write given the controversy over the recent sacking of Lim Teong Kim, as coach of the Malaysian Under-16 team. The sacking came within hours of the inability of Malaysia’s Under-16 team to qualify for the next round of a recent tournament, with Japan winning 2-0. I will not comment on the tournament itself, although I think the young Malaysians acquitted themselves very well, given the circumstances, almost going to the next round. As Malaysia’s Ambassador to Germany (1999-2003), I got to know Lim Teong Kim well. He was living in the Munich area, when I first met him, in 1999, soon after arriving in Germany. Lim Teong Kim was closely associated with the Munic

Governance of religious affairs

G25 wishes to congratulate YB Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, for his enlightened views about what lies at the heart of Islam. According to him Islam is about compassion for all (rahmatal lil alamin) and inclusiveness towards others. Respect for all religions is a cardinal principle of Islam. G25 lauds the determination of the Minister to protect the freedom of all faiths. This is in line with the Qur’anic declaration in Surah Al-Kafirun 109:6 “Unto you your religion, unto me mine”. The essence of YB Mujahid’s interview with The Star is to promote Islam as a religion of compassion, justice, mercy, moderation and inclusivity, all in line with the Qura
